In the shape of the crozier of St. John Paul II, a new crucifix now stands above the tabernacle in the school chapel.
When the school was designed, the chapel was placed at the center of the school, directly in front of all who enter the building. The intentionality of the central chapel keeps Our Lord as the physical as well as spiritual center of all that occurs within the walls of the school.
Now, the beautiful crucifix also serves “as a prominent reminder of Christ’s presence among us, that he is always here, ready to make all things new,” said Dominican Sister Mary Grace, head of school.
At an all-school Mass on All Saints Day, the entire school was present for the blessing of the new crucifix. It was made in Italy for the high school. In attendance were the generous school alumni who had the original inspiration to add the piece to the chapel and gave a donation to make the new crucifix possible. In her remarks, Sister Mary Grace thanked the benefactors for the generous gift of a crucifix. “Though it is new, it fits perfectly and looks as though it’s always been there,” she said. “It completes our chapel wonderfully and will be a blessing to our faith life here at John Paul.”
Father Christopher Tipton, chaplain, said participation in the spiritual life “informs every aspect of a John Paul education and the school community.” The presence of the beautiful crucifix will only further strengthen this faith life.
