The Prince William Chapter of the Catholic Business Network recently honored two outstanding Catholic educators from Prince William County.
The organization’s annual award recognized elementary school teachers Brittany Borman and Kristine Sanford for their steadfast commitment to Catholic education, during a banquet at All Saints Catholic Church’s activities center in Manassas Jan. 15, held in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week.
Borman has taught Spanish at St. Thomas Aquinas Regional School in Woodbridge for the past eight years, where she integrates creativity and technology to engage students in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish.
“Miss Borman utilizes Gimkit and Quizlet Live to help her students review in an exciting way,” Assistant Principal Janelle Ferguson said. “She expands Spanish vocabulary and comprehension through the use of the Señor Wooly website and videos, and an escape room type activity.”
Borman also serves as a mentor, school adviser, and testing data resource for her fellow teachers. Whether attending her students’ sporting events, coaching basketball and Battle of the Books, or regularly attending the sixth grade First Friday morning Mass and breakfast, she is committed to supporting the academic, social, and faith development of her students.
Sanford has served as a reading and dyslexia specialist at Linton Hall School in Bristow since 2016, and her education career spans 27 years.
“Mrs. Sanford impacts our students diagnosed with learning challenges, such as dyslexia or other language-based disorders, along with younger students who are showing signs of potential struggles,” said Head of School Adrianne Jewett. “She works with students in small group sessions to provide the support they desperately need to develop a foundation in reading to find success throughout their academic career.”
Sanford was instrumental in Linton Hall School’s implementation of the Test of Dyslexia screening tool, which she utilizes to identify struggling students and to provide data and opinions on how to address their challenges. She goes above and beyond to make time before, during, and after school to meet with parents, teachers, and administrators to provide guidance and develop effective support plans.
Winners were selected based on four categories: demonstrated impact on student learning, creativity in teaching, commitment to serving others, and proven leadership skills, according to chapter President Wayne Mattson of Realty By Wayne.
