The diocesan Office of Marriage, Family and Respect Life urges all Catholics to join Bishop Michael F. Burbidge in a time of prayer and fasting for the November elections in Virginia.
Bishop Burbidge will be praying and fasting every Friday in October before the Nov. 4 elections that will decide the next governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general, along with all 100 seats in the House of Delegates.
Bishop Burbidge and Richmond Bishop Barry C. Knestout released a joint statement in September calling on voters to be vigilant concerning the proposed constitutional amendments:
“These proposals have already moved part of the way through the General Assembly process. One of them would allow virtually unlimited abortion at any stage of pregnancy. The legislators we elect in the House races this November will decide whether these proposed constitutional amendments advance any further. With so much at stake, we must prepare to engage in this year’s critical voting decisions — through conscience formation, prayer and fasting. United in the Eucharist, let us pray for one another and join together as active participants in promoting the common good.”
