The diocese invites Catholics to join their parishes in the first-ever Diocesan Week of Service with the theme, “Love in Action – Service in Community,” Nov. 9-16.
Parishes will conduct service projects inspired by the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. The initiative is a fruit of developing the Diocesan Strategic Plan initiative No. 7, which is, “Hold an annual diocesan service day to unify the faithful in service to others.”
“As followers of Christ, we are called not only to pray and worship, but to serve,” Bishop Michael F. Burbidge said in a video announcing the week of service. “Throughout this week, parishes and ministries will be joining together in acts of service, supporting pro-life efforts, collecting food and clothing, visiting the sick and homebound, ministering to those in prison, and even planting trees. These are not just good deeds; they are powerful witness of our Catholic faith.”
Examples of projects include a free dental clinic at Christ the Redeemer Church in Sterling Nov. 15, a visit to the elderly by students of St. Mary of Sorrows Preschool in Fairfax, and a tree planting and visit to the imprisoned by parishioners of St. James Church in Falls Church.
