Johnny Holliday, the voice of Maryland athletics, and the
Youth Leadership Foundation (YLF) have teamed up for more
than 10 years to host the annual Johnny Holliday Scholarship
Classic.
The golf tournament has raised more than $1 million over the
years to helpsome 3,000 youths in the Washington metro area
receive personal mentoring from more than 250 college-aged
men and women through YLF’s summer programs.
This year’s golf tournament, which will be held June 6 at the
University of Maryland Golf Course in College Park, Md., will
recognize legendary DeMatha basketball coach Morgan Wootten
as its 2016 community champion honoree.
Wootten’s hall of fame career speaks to his personification
of commitment to the community and devotion to the betterment
of society. Past recipients of the award include Kevin Plank,
Leon Harris, Thomas Manger, the Lerner Family and Gary
Williams.
Proceeds from the tournament also offer financial assistance
to merit-worthy YLF students so they can attend private
elementary and high schools.
The tournament helps change the lives of young men and women
who graduate from YLF into Catholic high schools. One such
young man is Anderson Hall. Born and raised in Washington,
Hall attended the YLF summer program every summer from fifth
through eighth grade. He attended DeMatha High School and is
now attending Virginia State University in Petersburg, where
he will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in computer
science. Hall continues to serve as a mentor at YLF summer
programs.
