Faculty, staff and students of Marymount University in Arlington
gathered for the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit at the Sacred Heart of Mary Chapel
Sept. 6. Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge celebrated the Mass during his
first visit with Marymount students.
Father Tom M. Yehl, chaplain, Father Mike Kuhn, assistant
chaplain, and other members of the campus ministry also welcomed the students.
President Matthew Shank thanked Bishop Burbidge for being with the
community during the Mass — a Jesuit tradition that dates back to 1548. “We look
forward to working with you and your leadership,” said Shank.
In his homily, Bishop Burbidge encouraged the students to live
the beatitudes, to visit the chapel often and to go out to the peripheries,
especially to those who disagree with their faith and morals.
Hansel Dsouza is a senior information technology major at
Marymount who’s been a part of campus ministry since his freshman year. He’s
grateful for the opportunities for prayer campus ministry has provided, particularly
the retreats.
“(The people in campus ministry) have really cared for me. They
loved me where I was, and too much to leave me there,” he said, quoting something Ashton Mallon, director of campus ministry, once told him. “It’s always been such
a fulfilling experience for me.”
Several students were greeters, altar servers or sang in the
choir, such as junior Matthew Belmonte. “It’s a nice community,” he said. “It makes
you feel very at home.”
