John Buckreis, the man who’s sat in Santa’s chair at Merrifield
Garden Center in Fairfax since the mid-1970s, explains in the latest Searching
for More podcast why he’s devoted to teaching children about the true meaning
of Christmas. Buckreis’ connection to Santa began at age 14, when he was living
in a Buffalo orphanage. He wore a homemade suit of dyed cloth and cotton balls
and went caroling door-to-door in wealthy neighborhoods, to collect donations
of used toys.
