St. Martin de Porres Senior Center in Alexandria celebrated the completion of its renovations at a ribbon-cutting ceremony May 25. The center is working on a reopening plan to welcome seniors back after being closed for more than a year due to the pandemic.

While closed, the center partnered with the nonprofit HomeAid Northern Virginia to complete $40,000 in renovations that updated electrical and lighting systems, installed storage and shelving, upgraded bathrooms, built permanent walls to replace room dividers and installed ramps for accessibility.

“Our seniors have been feeling so isolated and having an updated and fresh ‘new’ building to look forward to returning to is so exciting,” said Anne Coyne, program director at the center. “As we emerge out of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is more important than ever that seniors connect, stay active and have accessible support when they need it. We can’t wait to get everyone back together again — in a responsible fashion — in our brighter, modernized and much-improved space.”
