Grade school students faced off against seminarians in a friendly competition — the 16th annual Seminarian Sprint May 19 at the Basilica School of St. Mary in Alexandria.
Students in kindergarten through the eighth grade competed against seminarians in relay races on the school’s blacktop and under the nearby Woodrow Wilson Bridge.
The event raised $16,000 — more than $7,800 through the school from student sponsorships and $8,200 from the basilica. The proceeds will support seminarian education through the diocesan Vocations Office and the diocesan Seminarian Education Endowment Fund (SEEF). The Arlington diocese invests more than $45,000 per seminarian for training and formation every year.
The seminarians also visited students in the classrooms, shared about their lives and answered questions.
