Bishop Michael F. Burbidge celebrated a Mass for the 10th Anniversary of the Election of Pope Francis at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington March 13, inviting all to thank God for the gift of the Holy Father’s leadership, as well as to pray for his continued health and effectiveness.
In his homily, Bishop Burbidge lauded the pope’s unwavering support for the unborn and all human life as well as his calls to care for all of God’s creation. He recalled four themes that Pope Francis has consistently articulated: radiating the joy of Jesus’ Gospel so as to attract others as followers of Christ; engaging in missionary discipleship to bring the church to people on the margins of society; accompanying one another to help each other reach Heaven; and embracing a simple lifestyle to better share what we have with the poor and others in need. He encouraged the congregation to find new ways during Lent to embrace each of these themes.
“We give thanks to God for the gifts of Pope Francis and his ministry,” he said. “Something tells me that if we asked him how can we best honor him on this anniversary, he might say ‘Promise anew to draw closer to Jesus, to live the truth and joy of his Gospel, and to serve and love one another, especially those in most need.’ I think on this occasion, we also honor Pope Francis if we respond to that initial request he made of us on the day he was introduced as our new pope and that is to pray for him. Pray for him today and always.”
Following Communion, Bishop Burbidge led three Hail Mary prayers for the pontiff.
