Bishop Michael F. Burbidge led a Celebration of the Passion of the Lord April 7 at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington.

In his homily, Bishop Burbidge invoked the theme of the second year of preparation for the Diocesan Golden Jubilee: “Rejoice.”

“We rejoice because, as Pope Francis says: ‘The crucifix does not signify defeat or failure. It reveals to us the love that overcame evil, sin, and even death itself,’ ” he said.

“I am sure that all of us in church today, without exception, have a cross we are carrying, a suffering we are enduring, and a burden we are shouldering,” he said. “And, today we unite them to the Lord’s and rejoice in knowing there is nothing we are experiencing that he has not already embraced for the sake of our salvation; and that no cross is greater than his love and mercy.”
