Some 600 patients and family members gathered in Woodbridge at the Catholic Charities Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic June 24 for its first Patient Appreciation Day, an event designed to provide a little pampering to patients who might not otherwise receive it. They received free haircuts and spa treatments, participated in fun games and activities, and enjoyed plenty of good food. For the children, the clinic offered a bounce house, facepainting, games, crafts and prizes.
A Mother of Mercy staff member proposed the idea to show support and appreciation for clinic patients, many of whom face financial constraints that prevent them from indulging in pampering experiences like manicures, haircuts, facials and makeup services.
Local parishes aided in the execution of the event. St. Agnes Church in Arlington covered the cost of food, Our Lady of Angels in Woodbridge provided games and St. Elizabeth Anne Seton in Lake Ridge contributed rosaries. Dozens of volunteers poured in from many other parishes in the area to run the different activities. Volunteers also provided lunch and desserts and nonperishable food that families could enjoy onsite or take home.
“I’m so grateful for the support of our parishes and volunteers who helped us share God’s love and consolation with so many people in our community,” said Catholic Charities President and CEO Stephen Carattini.
Catholic Charities staff hoped the event would offer an out-of-the-ordinary but meaningful way to share with their patients God’s love and compassion. “Thank you for thinking of us and organizing this special event just for us,” said Edith, a clinic patient attending the event. “You have no idea what this means to me. You genuinely care for our well-being.”
