If it’s summer, it must be planting, weeding and harvesting time in the garden behind Catholic Charities Christ House in Alexandria.
Volunteer coordinator Sister of Notre Dame de la Salette Aniliza Juan visited the garden recently to find cucumbers and tomatoes flourishing, while volunteers got to work harvesting herbs, bok choy and lettuces.
The garden is planted and tended each year by volunteers from nearby parishes, Catholic schools and scouts.
The produce — including peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, collard greens and herbs such as dill, rosemary, and basil — will be offered to men, women and families who visit the Christ House pantry, Sister Annie said. It also will be given to homeless people and others who stop by Christ House for the evening meal, which volunteer parish and other community groups have provided each night for the past 50 years
