The Fr. Augustus Tolton and Mother Lange Black Catholic Service Award was awarded to Carleton “CC” Jenkins, a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace in Arlington, Nov. 4.
The award, presented by the diocesan Office of Multicultural Ministries’ Black Catholic Ministry, honors a lay person who has supported the Black Catholic community in the diocese. The announcement came during the Black Catholic History Month event, “We’ve Come This Far by Faith: Continuing to Write the Vision.” The keynote speaker was Servant of St. Joseph Father Anthony Bozeman, academic dean of St. Joseph Seminary in Washington.
Jerry Cousin, chair of the diocesan Black Catholic Ministry, presented the Tolton award. Without naming the winner, Cousin began to list the qualities and acts of service that marked this year’s recipient. As Cousin explained the winner was a policeman for 30 years, served on his parish’s credit union and scholarship programs, and is a friendly and notable leader in his community, a look of humble realization spread across Jenkins’ face. At the end of a long litany of wonderful qualities, no one in the room was surprised to hear Jenkins’ name called as this year’s award recipient. He was presented a monetary gift and plaque.
