National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It was started in 1974 by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, this year Jan. 26-Feb. 1. The current theme is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.”
Schools typically observe the week with Masses, assemblies and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members.
The official logo brings the theme to life. The open book made up of multi-colored pages symbolizes how all areas of Catholic schools blend together, with faith — symbolized by the cross — at the forefront.
The theme changes every three years, with a new theme starting in 2021 that is voted on by a representation of more than 1,000 members from Catholic schools, including pastors, presidents, principals, teachers, parents, superintendents, board members, consultants and partners. According to the NCEA, the collaborative decision illustrates that Catholic Schools Week is made possible by the participation of the entire Catholic school community.
