Arlington Diocese to sponsor symposium on welcoming the stranger

The Peace and Justice Commission of the Diocese of Arlington is sponsoring a symposium Sept. 16 titled “Strengthening Our Unity by Welcoming the Stranger.” The event will be held at Church of the Nativity, 6400 Nativity Lane, Burke, from 9 a.m. to noon.

Arlington Bishop Michael F. Burbidge will celebrate Mass at 9 a.m., followed by a light breakfast. Presentations by Bishop Burbidge, Art Bennett, president and CEO of Arlington Catholic Charities, and Catherine Motolenich Torres, program director of legal services for Hogar Immigrant Services, will begin at 10 a.m.

The presentations will be followed by a roundtable discussion with facilitators and a question-and- answer session.

In preparation for this event, attendees are asked to review the document “From Shared to Enriched Parishes,” which provides the results of a major study published in 2016 on cultural diversity in the church.
