Spring brings events from confirmations and first holy Communions to baptisms, graduations, Mother’s and Father’s Day, ordinations and more. The Catholic Herald's Leslie Miller rounds up gift ideas from two of the best-known Catholic book and gift shops in the diocese, the Paschal Lamb in Fairfax and Pauline Books and Media in Alexandria. Small gift shops also are tucked into several churches around the diocese, including St. Anthony of Padua in Falls Church, St. Patrick in Fredericksburg and Sacred Heart of Jesus in Winchester, as well as San Damiano Spiritual Life Center in White Post. (Hours vary, so check websites before heading out.)

BAPTISMS

Julia Hecton of The Paschal Lamb says a popular item for births or baptisms is a 13-by-16-inch washable Lamb Rattle Blankie from Tender Blessings, featuring the stitched-on words, "Jesus Loves Me” ($18.50). Other ideas include a Crib Medal and Crucifix boxed set ($15), a brightly colored nontoxic Wooden Kiddie Rosary ($12) or a Shining Light St. Joan of Arc Plush doll, in shiny armor ($24.99.)

CONFIRMATIONS AND FIRST COMMUNIONS

For first communicants and confirmandi, the book “Brilliant! 25 Catholic Scientists, Mathematicians and Supersmart People” (Pauline Books and Media, $24.95) is an inspiring gift. The Paschal Lamb offers many beautiful boxes to hold rosaries or other precious items; the Guardian Angel wooden box (3¾ by 2½ inches, $12) also can be used as a devotional icon. Other popular gifts include jewelry, such as a multicolored crystal bracelet with a saint medal and cross ($26), Bible stories in comic book format ($19.95), bronze crosses such as a Creator Mundi confirmation cross ($36) or a First Communion Gift Set ($19). Other favored items include saints in many varieties, such as Tiny Saints backpack clips ($5), created by Joe and Colleen Klinker, former members of Church of the Nativity in Burke, to help explain a stillbirth to their other children. Other saint gifts at the Paschal Lamb include Shining Light saint dolls ($13.99); icons; saint medals on chains, and from Pauline Books and Media, the two-volume “Our Friends in Heaven: Saints for Every Day” ($16.95 each).

GRADUATIONS

For your special graduate, Daughters of St. Paul Sister Emily Beata Marsh recommends the beautiful volume, “In Caelo et in Terra: 365 Days with The Saints” (Daughters of St Paul, $49.95). Adult coloring books are a hot trend for stress-relief whether at home or on campus; check out choices such as the “Scripture Illuminated Coloring Book for Prayer and Meditation” ($16.95). Suggestions from the Paschal Lamb include a crucifix or small bronze wall plaque, such as the 4-inch Creator Mundi God’s Creation cross ($34), a tapestry cover for a Bible or iPad ($24) or a chunky bracelet with a cross or other religious symbols ($16 to $21).

MOTHER’S DAY

For Mom’s day in May, ideas from the Paschal Lamb include the popular “Cooking with the Saints” ($34.95), a scriptural coffee tumbler ($18) or “Choose Joy” tote bag ($14.50). For a really special gift, there’s icon-style original art from Cusco, Peru, in two sizes, with hand-carved gold frames ($250-$350). Pauline Books and Media suggests its new book, “A Place to Belong, Letters from Catholic Women” ($24.95).

FATHER’S DAY

The Year of St. Joseph has prompted a lot of interest in Pauline Books and Media’s new “St. Joseph Prayer Book” ($19.95), with many prayers, devotions and practices, due in early May, said Sr. Emily Beata Marsh of the Alexandria store. The Paschal Lamb also has a prominent display of St. Joseph items, including books, statues in all sizes, religious medals, T-shirts (“Work Hard, Pray Hard,” from That One Sheep, $18) and St. Joseph socks from Sock Religious ($14). Dad might love a scriptural house blessing plaque (Terra Sancta Guild, $15.99), books such as “Practical Holiness: Pope Francis as Spiritual Guide” ($15.99) or “67 Ways to Do the Works of Mercy with Your Kids,” ($11.95).
