The Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington hosted its first
Mobile Market Feb. 25 in conjunction with the Capital Area Food Bank to serve
those dealing with food insecurity. This drive-thru food distribution provided nonperishables
as well as fresh produce including fruits and vegetables.

The monthly market originally was scheduled to begin Feb. 18 but
was delayed due to inclement weather.

Recipients lined up in their cars, waiting outside the white
tents that the cathedral school recently opened as outdoor classrooms, while volunteers
worked quickly to place bagged groceries into trunks and backseats.

Father Patrick L. Posey, rector of the cathedral, said: “(W)e
have always sought to imitate our Lord’s words in Matthew 25:35, ‘For I was
hungry, and you gave me food, thirsty, and you gave me drink;’ but the pandemic
has exacerbated the already tenuous situation experienced by so many. Catholic
Charities has reported an exponential increase in food requests. Hunger knows
no timeline; it doesn’t recognize the seasons, the availability of vaccines,
age, gender or race. The food insecure have families; and I want them to know
that their spiritual family at STM is here for them. I am excited to start this
initiative to bring the face of Christ to our community.”
