Mother Teresa visited Assumption Church in Washington during a June 1981 visit for the opening of two new homes for the Missionaries of Charity. The future saint said the reason for opening the two homes was “to bring the joy of loving to every man, woman and child, born and unborn, so they can be something special.”

Mother Teresa also delivered brief remarks at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington June 1, 1982, and gave a longer talk to permanent deacons, women religious and priests in the cathedral’s Burke Hall. “Let us, while receiving the Eucharist today, thank God for all His precious gifts, one of whom is Mother Teresa,” said Arlington Bishop Thomas J. Welsh.
