David de Costa, a fourth grader at Queen of Apostles School in Alexandria, won first place in the Earth Science Week Visual Arts division of a national science contest organized by the American Geosciences Institute.

He was awarded a copy of The Geoscience Handbook and $300 presented to him by Sally Jewell, the former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, and Alexandria Mayor Allison Silberberg at a recent reception at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center.
