Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna recently hosted its
first Summer Kickoff event, which included food, fun, fellowship and fundraising.

Oblate Father Matthew J. Hillyard, pastor, volunteered at the
event, as did the other Oblate priests at the parish. More than 100 volunteers prepared
and served 400 meals and added $1,000 to the general parish fund. The diverse
menu included chicken tenders, fried shrimp and oysters, fried plantains, rice
and beans, and root beer floats.

Early in the evening there was a Battle of the Boards cornhole
competition, with Kevin O’Brien and John Loesch claiming the first place title.
Jim Briody and Michael Dykes came in second, while Justin and Stephanie Osterhage
claimed the third place slot. The tournament raised $225 to benefit the local
nonprofit Food for Others’ Power Pack program.

A family-friendly movie was played on an outdoor screen under the
stars later in the evening.

Similar to the parish fish fry events earlier in the year,
diverse groups of parishioners contributed to the effort, including the Boy
Scouts, Girl Scouts, Knights of Columbus, Men’s Club, the youth group, young
adults, teachers, students and Women of OLGC.

In addition, local businesses such as Caboose Brewery, Kelley’s
Tree Service, and Norm’s Beer and Wine contributed to the event’s success.
