The diocese is holding two events in August to address racism: a
prayer service Aug. 1 and a presentation and dialogue Aug. 25.

The prayer service, “Requiem for the Black Children of God,” will
be led by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge Aug. 1 at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More
in Arlington at 10:30 a.m. It also will be online.

Hosted by the diocesan Black Catholic Ministry and the Office of
Multicultural Ministries, the service is open to the public, with a capacity
limit of 250 people. Face masks and social distancing are required.

The second event, “Responding to Racism: A Diocesan Dialogue,”
will be held Aug. 25 at Church of the Nativity in Burke at 7 p.m. The event
will be livestreamed on the diocesan YouTube channel. In-person capacity will
be limited to 100 attendees. Face masks and social distancing are required.

Sponsored by diocesan Catholic Charities, the panel and dialogue
will include Bishop Burbidge and Father Scott Woods, a priest in the
Archdiocese of Washington, and Father Bob Cilinski, diocesan episcopal vicar of
Charitable Works and Nativity pastor.

Father Woods is pastor of two Southern
Maryland parishes, St. Cecilia Church in St. Mary’s City and St. Peter Claver
Church in St. Inigoes. He is also chaplain and founder of the spiritual
direction program at St. Mary’s Ryken Catholic High School in Leonardtown.
