Local author Stephen Gabriel has written a new book of advice for retirement living, inspired by counsel St. John Paul II offered seniors late in his papacy.

At the age of 79, Pope John Paul II wrote a letter to the “dear elderly people of all languages and cultures” as encouragement in the autumn of their lives.

The letter inspired Gabriel, a parishioner of St. James Church in Falls Church and a retired government economist, to share his perspective on how to effectively adopt a proper state of heart and mind during the retirement years. “The Homestretch: Making the Best Use of Our Retirement Years,” was published by Scepter Publishers.

In it, Gabriel addresses the Lord’s call to both give of oneself and receive God’s blessings. Other topics include developing a life plan to grow closer to God; grandparents’ role in the formation of grandchildren; ways to sanctify and find joy in suffering; evangelizing friends and family; and the importance of guardian angels.

Gabriel is also the author of “Hope for Your Grandchildren,” and “The Indispensable Dad,” among other works.
