Bishop Burbidge’s Statement for Respect Life Month 2022

Each October, the Catholic Church in the United States observes Respect Life Month. Thanks to the United States Supreme Court’s overturning in June of the wrongly decided Roe v. Wade, we find ourselves in a unique time in American history. Decisions about abortion laws have been returned to the people in the states and we, the People of Life, are called to defend every human being from conception to natural death and to serve mothers in need.

Following this historic decision, attacks on churches, pro-life ministries, and people of faith seem to be multiplying. Despite these attacks, I urge all Catholics to remain prayerfully and peacefully committed to the work of building a culture of life. After all, the lesson of the Dobbs case is to persevere, never lose hope and trust that God will continue to work miracles, always in His time.

The Supreme Court’s corrective ruling is an unprecedented step in the right direction, but we know that abortion remains legal in Virginia. In some ways, our work has just begun. It is time for us to renew our ongoing commitment here in the Commonwealth to bring an end to abortion through prayer, service and advocacy; protect and assist women in crisis pregnancies; and safeguard all human life.

The Catholic Church in the United States provides unparalleled support for women in crisis pregnancies as well as post-abortion care. Catholic Charities offers counseling, financial assistance, adoption services and even housing to mothers in need. Gabriel Project extends a welcoming hand to women in crisis pregnancies and a hotline to call if they need help. Our parishes host ministries for pregnant women and their children, ensuring they have a full range of necessary support. Project Rachel provides retreats and counseling for women who have endured the pain and wounds of abortion.

To all who have suffered the pain of abortion, I assure you, Our Lord desires to bring you comfort and peace. Through His mercy, you can experience His healing, forgiveness and abiding presence in your life. The Catholic Church stands ready to walk with you on that journey.
