Pope Francis was taken to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital for abdominal surgery under general anesthesia after the weekly general audience June 7, shortly after 11 a.m. Rome time, the Vatican said.

Bishop Michael F. Burbidge tweeted the morning of June 7 asking everyone in the diocese to pray for Pope Francis.

“Please keep Pope Francis in your prayers, especially at this time as he undergoes a medical procedure. May Our Lord Jesus bless him with his healing love,” he said.
