In a video message published on the diocesan YouTube channel Oct. 13, Bishop Michael F. Burbidge addressed next month’s statewide elections.

“Sadly, despite the Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade, abortion remains legal during all nine months of pregnancy in the commonwealth of Virginia,” Bishop Burbidge said. “The government has many responsibilities, but the defense of life is its most fundamental. Defending life requires us to entrust the reins of government only to those who will protect the most vulnerable among us. This is an obligation we must take seriously and carry out prayerfully.

“Next month, Virginia will be holding a critical election as every seat in the general assembly is on the ballot. I encourage the faithful and all people of good will to join in radical solidarity with the unborn, their mothers and other vulnerable persons by voting for candidates who defend life at every stage.

“We must know where the candidates stand and evaluate their positions in light of church teachings. We must proclaim the Gospel life in the public square. One of the most effective ways we can do this is by voting with an informed and faithful conscience.

“Early in-person voting is underway from Sept. 22nd to Nov. 4th. This is a great way to make sure we vote no matter how hectic our schedules. It is also a great opportunity to help others in our parishes who might need a ride to the polls or help formulating a voting plan.

“Abortion advocates are encouraging their supporters to turn out in record numbers. As such, Catholics must rise to the occasion and demonstrate our support for unborn children and their mothers. That is radical solidarity. May Mary our mother intercede for us as we strive to build a future for Virginia in which every life is cherished and protected in law.”
