In December, many in Virginia listened with hope as the U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case concerning Mississippi’s ban on most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. In January, many Virginians gathered with dedication and passion for the 49th annual National March for Life. And Feb. 9, the powerful, faith-filled presence and energy of pro-life advocates throughout Virginia are especially needed to fill the halls of the General Assembly.

Feb. 9 is the inaugural Defending Life Day, and your presence in Richmond that day is of vital importance. Your legislators are in Richmond until March and they will be debating more than 2,000 bills — including pro-life legislation that would save lives right here in Virginia. They represent you and need to hear from you.

Defending Life Day will feature prayer led by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge and Richmond Bishop Barry C. Knestout, key meetings at legislators’ offices and Mass.

If Roe is reversed, as so many are praying it will be, state efforts to protect life will become all the more critical. It’s time to build for that moment now. Be engaged. Be a powerful presence.

Caruso is executive director of the Virginia Catholic Conference.
