In response to the devastating floods that have swept through Kerr County, Texas, including the grounds of Camp Mystic, Mercy Trails is launching a nationwide call to action. Teens across the country will participate in a day of hiking July 12 in a movement called “Hike for Texas.”

Mercy Trails, a nonprofit and 501(c) 3, mobilizes national youth-led effort to support Texas flood victims and the Camp Mystic community. It was founded by Alex Thielman, a student at Gonzaga College High School in Washington and a parishioner of the Basilica of St. Mary in Alexandria.

Mercy Trails will collect donations from July 7 to July 21. All donations will be directed to the Kerr County Flood Relief Fund, supporting organizations such as the Salvation Army and local churches assisting impacted families and camps.

“This hike is a tangible way for teens everywhere to walk in solidarity with the people of Texas and Kerr County,” said Thielman, founder of Mercy Trails

Teens or groups who sign up commit to a hike July 12 anywhere in the country. Participants are encouraged to share their journey on social media with #HikeForKerrCounty @mercy.trails.

A hike in Old Town Alexandria will begin at Waterfront Park at 10 am July 12. There will be a Mercy Trails sign and QR code for passersby to make donations.

In a time when so many feel powerless in the face of natural disasters, Mercy Trails says it empowers youths to serve through steps, prayer and purpose.
