Arlington Bishop Emeritus Paul S. Loverde celebrated the closing Mass of the annual conference of the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary, Northern States District, at St. Joseph Church in Alexandria last month. Josephite Father Donald M. Fest, pastor of St. Joseph, concelebrated.
The online conference ran May 13-16 and was themed “Faith Over Fear.” Discussion topics included social justice work and the five pillars of the Knights’ national initiative: criminal justice reform, domestic violence, racism, black lives matter and human trafficking.
Six scholarships, totaling $5,000, were awarded.
Bishop Loverde approved the establishment of Council No. 398 for the Knights of Peter Claver in the Arlington diocese and insisted on being initiated with the other candidates. The council bears his name as the Bishop Paul S. Loverde Council. The Ladies Auxiliary Court is named after Mother Mary
Lange, founder of the oldest order of Black Catholic nuns in the world, the Oblate Sisters of Providence. Mother Lange is among the six holy men and women under consideration to be the first canonized African American saint.
