Benedictine Sister. Doris Nolte died May 21 at St. Benedict Monastery in Bristow.
She was born Oct. 27, 1929, in Richmond to William Joseph and Helen Cecilia (Kusterer) Nolte. She attended St. Benedict Catholic School and Saint Gertrude High School in Richmond, where she graduated in 1946. She entered St. Benedict Monastery Sept. 8, 1946, and professed perpetual vows May 11, 1952. She took the religious name Mary David, but later returned to her name at birth, Doris.
Sister Doris began her religious service serving at Linton Hall School in Bristow, and at Sacred Heart School, St. Paul School and Saint Gertrude High School, all in Richmond. Upon earning her nursing certificate, Sister Doris began a new phase of her religious life as a registered nurse, which she continued until her retirement.
She then worked with the program BEACON for English Language and Literacy, teaching students preparing for nursing school. In addition, Sister Doris was appointed subprioress of the monastery and later formation director for the postulants and novices. In her later years, Sister Doris happily knit hats and scarves for the homeless. She was very devoted to her extended family.
Sister Doris is survived by the members of her monastic community, her sister, Mary Ann Sheehan of Richmond, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings Father William “Billy” Nolte, Robert “Bobby” Nolte, David Nolte, Paul (Virginia) Nolte deceased, and Marguerite “Peggy” Nolte Benedetti. A vigil service was held at St. Benedict Monastery May 30, and a Mass of Christian burial May 31, followed by a burial at the monastery cemetery.
