Along with the Catholic Herald ‘s 50th anniversary this year, another well-known organization will celebrate its birth in the diocese the same year. Birthright of Fredericksburg was founded in 1976 by the late Irene Hagerty with the help of fellow members from the Council of Catholic Women at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Fredericksburg.

Through both good years and lean times, the pregnancy support service has persevered in its mission of loving them both babies and moms facing an unplanned pregnancy. The all-volunteer group, usually very self-effacing, plans a March 22 celebration to mark this momentous occasion with a gala and invites the public to join them in the fun.

The guest speaker will be Melissa Ohden, the founder and director of the Abortion Survivors Network. She is the survivor of a failed saline infusion abortion at approximately 7 months gestation.

The master of ceremonies will be Patrick A’Hearn, Broadway veteran and current CEO and artistic director for Riverside Center for the Performing Arts in Fredericksburg.

The Birthright event will be held at the Holiday Inn Conference Center at 20 Sanford Dr., Fredericksburg, located off I-95 at Exit 133. Guests will enjoy a complimentary dinner and a cash bar. Cocktail attire is suggested for the event that will run from 4 to 8 p.m.

While the dinner is complimentary, guests will have an opportunity to donate to the non-profit 501(c)3 organization that evening. There are also table sponsorships available in advance of the evening ranging from $250 to $1,000.
