Bishop Michael F. Burbidge led a prayer service at the Cathedral
of St. Thomas More in Arlington Jan. 24 to mark the Week of Prayer for
Christian Unity.
Students from the Cathedral School of St. Thomas More
participated in the event, along with members of the chancery staff. Father
Thomas P. Ferguson, vicar general and pastor of Good Shepherd Church in Mount
Vernon, was the homilist.
“The sources of division among Christians are many, complex and
often centuries old,” Bishop Burbidge said in a statement released last week. “They
also are contrary to the mind of Christ and an obstacle to the church’s primary
mission of evangelization. More powerful than what divides us, however, is what
unites us as brothers and sisters in Christ, including our faith in Jesus, the
wisdom of the Word of God, the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit and the
grace of a common baptism.”
