The Virginia General Assembly passed a budget that cuts the state’s only school choice program by more than half.
The Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits Program (EISTC) uses donor-funded scholarships to provide financial assistance to low-income students to attend eligible private schools and nonpublic pre-K programs. In the current fiscal year, the program has generated more than $15 million in tax credits.
The new bill, which cuts the budget from $25 to $12 million a year, will now go to Gov. Glenn Youngkin, who can amend or veto specific provisions. The Virginia Catholic Conference is urging Catholic Virginians to voice their opposition to the budget cut by contacting Gov. Youngkin.
