Catholic University in Washington will host events in March
and April to honor Archbishop Fulton Sheen, a Catholic U.
alumnus who taught religion and philosophy there for 23
years. All events will be held at Catholic U., 620 Michigan
Ave., N.E., Washington, and are open to the public.

“Venerable Fulton Sheen was an icon of Catholic America in
the 1950s,” said Sister Maria Frassati Jakupcak, co-chairman
of Catholic U.’s Fulton Sheen Legacy Committee. “This year
marks the 75th anniversary of his first appearance on
television.”

In addition to celebrating his television and radio career,
Catholic U. is marking Archbishop Sheen’s journey on the path
to sainthood. Pope Benedict XVI declared him “venerable” in
2012, and a miracle attributed to him was approved in 2014.

The first event will be a video screening of “Fulton Sheen
and Catholic Teaching on the Economy,” March 3 at 7 p.m. in
Aquinas Auditorium. The screening will be followed by a panel
discussion including Andrew Abela, dean of the School of
Business and Economics, and Joseph Capizzi, associate
professor of theology and religious studies.

On April 15, the Archbishop Fulton Sheen memorial classroom
will be dedicated in McMahon Hall at 3 p.m., followed by a
Mass at 5:10 p.m. in Caldwell Chapel. Father Andrew Apostoli,
vice-postulator of the canonization cause, will be the
homilist.
