Catholics across the diocese participated in Wreaths Across America Dec. 16, laying wreaths at the gravesites of deceased veterans while praying for the repose of their souls.

For the third year in a row, the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary of Sorrows Church in Fairfax organized a ceremony honoring 84 Catholic veterans buried in the parish’s Old St. Mary’s Cemetery. They were assisted by area Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Girl Scout troops.

An honor guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8469 as well as representatives from the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines and POW/MIAs also participated.

At Alexandria National Cemetery, where more than 4,000 veterans are buried, American Heritage Girls from St. Rita Church and scouts from the Basilica St. Mary Church, both in Alexandria, participated.
