Chancery staffer Mary Stewart dies at age 69

Mary Stewart, diocesan director of risk management, died Sept. 3 at age 69 following a long illness.

Stewart worked for the diocese since 2011. She was instrumental in implementing several programs focused on workplace, parish and school safety.

“Mary approached life and work with much joy,” said Ward Jones, chief operations officer for the diocese. “She was dedicated to the mission of the diocese and particularly to keeping our parishes and schools safe. She will be deeply missed.”

Stewart earned a bachelor’s in psychology and a bachelor’s in speech and theater from Indiana University of Pennsylvania; a master’s in safety science management from the University of Southern California; and a general certification in law enforcement from the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Academy.

She was a licensed property and casualty insurance broker, and a licensed insurance consultant.

Prior to coming to the chancery, Stewart was director of research and business development for the Public Entity Risk Institute in Fairfax. She also served as vice president and client relationship manager for AON Risk Services in Washington.

She was a risk manager for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Henrico County near Richmond and the City of Alexandria. She also served as a police officer in Alexandria 1977-78.

There will be a viewing Sept. 7 at Demaine Funeral Home in Alexandria from 10 a.m. until noon. She will be buried in Pennsylvania at a later date.
