Coombs powers St. Mary’s Ryken Knights to WCAC softball championship victory

Junior shortstop Melody Coombs from St. Mary’s Ryken High School in Leonardtown, Md., hit a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth inning and a three-run blast in the eighth inning to power the Knights over Bishop O’Connell High School of Arlington 9-6 in the 2019 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference softball championship. The game was played May 6 at the Academy of the Holy Cross in Kensington, Md.

 

It was the seventh straight year that O’Connell and Ryken have met in the title game, with O’Connell taking home the last three trophies.

 

Coombs was selected the 2019 WCAC Player of the Year. She had a .509 batting average, with 26 runs scored, 24 runs batted in and 18 extra base hits, including 10 home runs.
