Back-to-school time can be both exciting and overwhelming, no matter who you are. For families that came to this country as refugees, this time is magnified as many of these children worry about simply fitting in.

Bishop Michael F. Burbidge joined diocesan Catholic Charities President and CEO Stephen Carattini for the annual backpack distribution for clients at Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services office in Manassas Aug. 14. Students from preschool to high school were able to select a backpack filled with school supplies, ensuring they start the year on the right foot. Bishop Burbidge offered students prayers and best wishes for the upcoming year.

So far this summer, diocesan MRS offices have distributed 425 backpacks to students who come from various countries, including Afghanistan, Bolivia, Congo, Eritrea and Ukraine. More backpacks will be distributed since not all school districts return at the same time, and some clients were unable to attend the events.
