Catholic leaders, benefactors, clergy, and friends of Divine Mercy University gathered in McLean May 3 for an evening of reflection, fellowship, and shared mission centered on the newly established Bishop Loverde Scholarship Fund.
Hosted by Byron and Elva Siliezar and Karl and Susan Salnoske, the gathering featured Bishop Emeritus Paul S. Loverde and Legionaries Father Charles Sikorsky, president of Divine Mercy University in Sterling. It highlighted a shared commitment to forming faithful, compassionate and professionally excellent Catholic mental health leaders for the church and broader community.
Father Sikorsky reflected on the history and mission of Divine Mercy University, as well as Bishop Loverde’s longstanding relationship with and support of the university. Bishop Loverde, keynote speaker, reflected on the importance of faithful Catholic formation and service to the church.
Tom O’Neill, executive director of external affairs at Divine Mercy University, spoke about the vision and purpose of the scholarship fund and the importance of supporting future Catholic mental health professionals. Laura O’Neill, a university alumna, offered personal reflections on her experience and formation at the school and the impact such opportunities can have on students preparing to serve others through counseling and psychology.
Established in honor of Bishop Loverde’s longstanding support of Divine Mercy University and his enduring commitment to the dignity of the human person, the scholarship fund will help support priests, religious and lay students preparing to serve dioceses and communities across the country. The initiative also provides support for students who commit to serving in the Arlington diocese following graduation.
“Together, we are forming leaders who will carry this mission forward with faith, compassion and professional excellence,” said Father Sikorsky.
Divine Mercy University’s initial goal is to raise $500,000 in support of the scholarship fund and its mission to serve the church through faithful, clinically excellent mental health education.
