Seeing the savior of the world hanging on the cross should not be interpreted as a sign of defeat or failure, but a reminder to take up our own crosses if we wish to follow Jesus, Bishop Michael F. Burbidge said March 29.

Leading a celebration of Good Friday of the Passion of the Lord at the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington, Bishop Burbidge recalled recently having his bag pulled at airport security. Opening it, an officer pointed to a cross inside, saying, “This is causing the confusion.” To which his colleague replied, “It shouldn’t!”

“Why do we embrace the cross?” Bishop Burbidge asked. “It is the path to holiness and a deeper union with the Lord. We are never holier than when we are with him on the cross.”

“With reliance on the Lord, no cross is too heavy for us to carry.”
