Joe Shircliff, a parishioner of St. Patrick Church in Fredericksburg, died Jan. 18 from complications following a tonsillectomy Jan. 13, the family said on social media. He was 8 years old. He leaves behind his siblings and parents Rob and Erin.

Joe suffered multiple post-tonsillectomy hemorrhages, after the second of which he was transported to VCU Children’s Hospital in Richmond, where he received medical attention in the intensive care unit for several days.

“We are deeply grateful to the incredible medical teams who gave us the gift of an extra 72 hours with Joe,” Rob wrote on social media. “Their tireless efforts allowed us precious time to pray, cry, laugh, rock out to Joe’s favorite tunes, and celebrate Mass together.”

A prayer vigil for Joe and his family was held Jan. 17 at St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Church in Fredericksburg. Friends have established a GoFundMe page to collect donations toward anticipated staggering medical costs.

Joe’s wake will be Jan. 28 at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel in Fredericksburg. His funeral is scheduled for Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Church in Fredericksburg.
