Bishop Michael F. Burbidge celebrated a Mass for Marriage Jubilarians at St. Agnes Church in Arlington Oct. 15. This year, the jubilarians represented 6,125 years of marriage, Bishop Burbidge said.
“Your faithful witness to married love is such a gift to your family and indeed the entire church,” he said.
“Married love is a sacrament because it is a visible sign of the way that Jesus loves his bride, the church. Every time we look at a married couple, we must be able to say, ‘Do you see how they love one another? That’s the exact way Christ loves us.’
“That’s why the church teaches that married love, like Christ’s love, must be forever. It must be faithful and lifegiving, kind and patient, and gentle. Dear jubilarians, you have been.”
Diane and Brian Turner attended the Mass to mark their 50th wedding anniversary along with their son, Michael, and his wife, Lori, who celebrated 25 years. Diane said this makes three generations of Turners who have attended, since Brian’s parents celebrated their 50th at the Mass in 1984.
“Bishop Michael Burbidge captured the total essence of the importance of marriage and family life in his beautiful homily and presentation of the Holy Mass,” said Diane. “How thoughtful to give each woman a red rose and we greatly appreciate the anniversary certificates to commemorate the occasion.”
Over the years, she and Brian have found commonality in their volunteering and friendships, and pray the rosary daily together, she said.
Her advice to young couples is to use the faith as common ground. “Try to spend as much time together, and make a habit of attending Holy Mass. In addition, eat your meals together. I think just sitting at the table and sharing a meal is most beneficial.”
