In a powerful display of unity, faith, and cultural richness, approximately 4,000 faithful gathered at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Falls Church Sept. 21, to participate in the Hispanic Heritage Mass and Festival, as part of the commemoration of Hispanic Heritage Month.
Bishop Michael F. Burbidge presided over the Mass and expressed his profound gratitude for the faithful witness and vibrant presence of Hispanic Catholics in the life of the church. At the beginning of the celebration, he warmly greeted those present and thanked the Hispanic community for enriching the church with their faith and commitment.
The homily was given by Father Luis Quiñonez, who offered a profound reflection on the spiritual significance of the day.
“Today we gather around the altar of the Lord to hear his Word and participate in the banquet of the Eucharist. But this Sunday has a special brilliance because, together with the entire church, we also celebrate the richness of our Hispanic heritage. We recognize and thank God for the gifts that our cultures, our languages, our traditions and our families bring to the life of the church here in the United States. It is a moment of faith, of gratitude, and also of commitment.”
These words resonated in the hearts of the faithful, many of whom expressed their emotion at feeling recognized and valued within the body of Christ.
After the Mass, the festive atmosphere continued on the parish grounds with a joyful community festival. Attendees enjoyed traditional food from various Latin American countries, folk dances, live music and activities for the whole family. It was a true expression of unity in diversity, celebrating not only culture but also the faith that unites us as one church.
The Hispanic Heritage Festival not only honored the cultural traditions of Latino peoples but also reaffirmed the vital role Hispanic Catholics play in the life of the church in the United States. Such celebrations respond to the call of the nation’s bishops in their National Pastoral Plan for Hispanic/Latino Ministry, which invites dioceses to recognize, accompany, and strengthen the identity, spirituality, and mission of the Hispanic faithful as an essential part of the Body of Christ. It was a day of gratitude, celebration, and renewed commitment to the mission of the church.
