New all-time leading scorer, rebounder at Bishop Ireton

Bishop Ireton High School senior Akunna Konkwo recently became the school’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder for the girls basketball team, garnering more than 2,000 points and 1,500 rebounds in her four years with the team.

“I’m thankful to my parents, coaches and teammates for helping me achieve this milestone,” Konkwo said. “I’m very excited to be playing basketball at Boston College this fall.”

“It’s special to have such a dominant player leading our girls basketball program,” said Bryce Bevill, the athletic director at Bishop Ireton. “She has sustained excellence during her four years here through her hard work, commitment and dedication.”

The Bishop Ireton Cardinals compete in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) and Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA). Led by Konkwo, the Cardinals lost to St. John’s College High School of Washington 53-38 in the WCAC playoffs Feb. 24. The Cadets  defeated Bishop McNamara Feb. 25 to win their third straight conference championship.

The Cardinals are scheduled to face-off against St. Anne’s-Belfield School in the VISAA State Tournament March 1.
