Katherine May of Winchester completed the next step of her monastic journey with the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia by becoming a novice Sept. 2. She entered the Benedictine Sisters community in Bristow Jan. 15.
During the ceremony, she was presented with a copy of the ancient Rule of St. Benedict and was given the name Sister Katherine May, O.S.B.
The novitiate year is one of study and prayer with very limited contact outside the Benedictine monastery.
Sister Katherine will be directed in her formation by Benedictine Sister Cecilia Dwyer, director of mission integration and formation.
In her exhortation to the new novice and community, Sister Andrea Westkamp, administrator, said, “As Katherine is moving through this year of novitiate, we all are moving with her. May all of us together live into that slow unfolding of the mystery of our vocation.”
The Benedictine Order was begun in the sixth century by St. Benedict of Nursia. Founded in 1868, the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia have ministered in the Richmond and Arlington Dioceses for more than 150 years.
