Father Jamie R. Workman began a new job Jan. 1 as the vicar
general in the Diocese of Arlington after being appointed to the post by Bishop
Michael F. Burbidge late last year. “I am confident that Father Workman’s
administrative skills and pastoral abilities will be a great service to me and
our diocese as he assumes his new responsibilities,” said Bishop Burbidge.

Father Workman was born Aug. 7, 1975, in State College, Pa. He
was baptized and confirmed at St. Robert Bellarmine Chapel in Fairfax in 1997
by Father Robert C. Cilinksi. In 2000, he received his bachelor’s degree in
business management from George Mason University in Fairfax. He was ordained to
the priesthood June 10, 2006.

He served as parochial vicar of Blessed Sacrament Church in
Alexandria and the Cathedral of St. Thomas More in Arlington before studying
canon law full time starting in 2010. He earned his licentiate in canon law at
The Catholic University of America in Washington in 2013. Before his
appointment as vicar general, he was the delegate for canonical affairs and
chancellor, which included serving as an administrative aid to the bishop. As
vicar general, he will assist the bishop with his ministry in the diocese.

According to canon law, the vicar general must be at least 30
years old, an expert in canon law and theology, unrelated to the bishop and
“recommended by sound doctrine, integrity, prudence, and experience in handling
matters.”

“I’m very excited and enthusiastic to begin my work in this
role,” said Father Workman. “Bishop Burbidge values consultation and wants to
hear from the clergy and faithful on important matters regarding the faith and
the administration of the Diocese. As part of this role, I will work to help
facilitate that consultation and make sure he is aware of the various
perspectives and needs of the Diocese.

“I am also humbled by the confidence that the Bishop has placed
in me to take on this significant leadership role in the Diocese to serve the
people of God.”
