80 years
Benedictine Sister Anita Sherwood was born Nov. 3,
1918, in Lewinsville, Va., to Daniel and Honore Sherwood.
She earned her bachelor’s from Mount St. Agnes College in
Baltimore and Mount Mercy College in Pittsburgh. She earned
master’s degrees in theology and in English through the
University of Notre Dame and the University of Louvain,
Belgium.
She professed her first vows April 12, 1936.
For more than 45 years, Sister Anita taught at Linton Hall in
Bristow, St. Benedict and St. Gertrude in Richmond, St.
Charles Borromeo in Arlington and St. Rose of Lima in
Hampton. For 15 years she served as principal of St.
Gertrude.
She served in a variety of positions in parish service,
including as pastoral assistant, director of ministries and
coordinator of worship and sacraments. Her parish assignments
include: St. Benedict and Epiphany in Richmond; St. Rose of
Lima in Hampton; Prince of Peace in Chesapeake; St. Charles
and St. Ann in Arlington; Sacred Heart in Hoadly; and St.
Elizabeth Ann Seton in Lake Ridge.
Sister Anita retired in 1999 and currently resides at the St.
Benedict Monastery in Bristow.

Sister, Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Anne Marie
Markoe was born April 27, 1945, in Philadelphia to George
and Anne Markoe. She has a brother and a sister.
After graduating from Little Flower High School in
Philadelphia, she earned her bachelor’s from Immaculata
College in Pennsylvania, and her master’s from Villanova
University.
She professed her first vows June 28, 1966.
Sister Anne Marie taught in elementary and high schools in
the Philadelphia and Allentown dioceses in Pennsylvania, and
in the dioceses of Metuchen, N.J.; Lima, Peru; and Santiago,
Chile.
Sister currently teaches science at Bishop O’Connell High
School in Arlington.
Sister, Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Janice
Thérèse Urbanec was born June 17, 1945, in
Long Branch, N.J., to Edward and Rose Urbanec. She has three
sisters.
After moving to Northern Virginia, she attended St. James
School in Falls Church and graduated from Bishop O’Connell
High School in Arlington. She earned her bachelor’s from
Immaculata College in Pennsylvania, a master’s of education
from Trenton State College in New Jersey and a master’s of
religious studies from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in
Wynnewood, Pa.
She professed her first vows June 28, 1966.
Sister Janice taught in elementary and high schools in the
Philadelphia and Harrisburg dioceses in Pennsylvania and in
the Diocese of Camden, N.J. In the Arlington Diocese, she was
assigned to Villa Maria Academy in Falls Church, Bishop
O’Connell and St. Francis of Assisi Church in Triangle.
Sister currently serves as director of adult faith formation
at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Vienna.
25 years
Sister of Our Lady of La Sallette Aniliza Juan was
born Aug. 12, 1961, in Manila, Philippines. She was the
eldest and only daughter of Herminio and Hilaria Juan.
She graduated from the Meycauayan Institute and earned her
bachelor’s in accounting from the University of the East in
the Philippines, becoming a certified public accountant.
She professed her first vows Aug. 24, 1991.
Sister Aniliza served as teacher, treasurer and bookkeeper at
the School of Our Lady of La Salette. She also was assigned
to the National Shrine of Our Lady of La Salette Marian
Retreat Center. She served as postulants’ directress,
regional bookkeeper, councilor and treasurer, and ultimately
as treasurer and provincial for the order’s Philippine
mission.
Sister Aniliza currently serves as Mission Procure treasurer
and as volunteer coordinator for Christ House in Alexandria.
