The Bishop O’Connell Knights battled to achieve something they last accomplished 25 years ago, winning the recent Washington Catholic Athletic Conference postseason tournament.
The No. 2 seed defeated top-seeded St. Paul VI Catholic High School in a three-game championship series.
After leading 5-2, the Knights lost the first game, 7-5. They rallied for a walk-off, 4-3 victory in extra innings in the second game. Then held on to win the final, 5-2. All three games were played at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md.
O’Connell won the title, for the first time since 2001, with strong hitting and pitching throughout the games. “Our bats were solid throughout,” O’Connell coach Chris Berset said. “We got a lot of big two-strike hits and we celebrated that.”
