Bishop O’Connell High School alum Frank Fumich summited Mount Everest May 22. A member of the Class of 1986 and a current O’Connell parent, Fumich reached the summit around 4:30 a.m. and posed for photos with flags from his alma maters, O’Connell in Arlington and West Virginia University in Morgantown.

Fumich now joins a select group of 7,563 people who have successfully summited Everest, while also completing the “Explorer’s Grand Slam,” an achievement accomplished by only some 75 people in history. The grand slam requires adventurers to reach the North Pole, South Pole, and the Seven Summits, including Mounts Everest, Aconcagua, Denali, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Vinson, and either Puncak Jaya or Mount Kosciuszko.

The O’Connell administration said the school is proud to celebrate this incredible accomplishment and the determination, perseverance and spirit it represents.
