Cole helps Paul VI avoid the upset

Jonquanae Cole scored 22 points to help Paul VI Catholic High School of Fairfax defeat rival Bishop O’Connell High School of Arlington 66-58. The game was played Feb. 6 in Fairfax.

Cole received scoring help from teammates Kendall Hunter and Kayla Meador, who both scored 11 points for the second-ranked Panthers. Paul VI improved its record to 24-2 on the season (15-0 in conference).

The Knights, who held the lead at halftime, were led by Janiya Clemmons (17 points) and Katie Meckus (15 points).

In the boys’ game, Paul VI’s VJ King put on a dominating performance to lead the Panthers to a 50-31 win over the Knights. King scored 26 points and led a suffocating defensive effort. O’Connell only scored seven points in the second half.

Paul VI swept its season series against O’Connell.
